I’ve been using the Hughes Power Watchdog 50 Amp Smart Bluetooth Surge Protector for a year now and I won’t hook up to a power pedestal without it.
I have the older model Hughes Autoformer that does not have the built-in surge protection. It’s always concerned me what could happen in the event of a power surge or spike. In doing my research I found that Hughes had the only smart surge protector on the market that connects to your phone via Bluetooth and uses the dedicated Power Watchdog app. Being able to sit comfortably inside while being able to monitor how much power has been consumed is great. You can see how many watts and kilowatt hours have been used. I think this would be especially useful for power management for full-timers that pay for their electricity on a long-term site. You can monitor the volts and amps on both lines if you’re 50-amp and the single line if you’re 30-amp. I even pointed out a potential issue to one park manager because the volts between the two lines were way out of whack.
The unit itself has three LEDs that will let you know the condition of the power pedestal you’re plugging into (open neutral/ground, missing legs, neutral reversed) so you can see if everything is working properly before plugging your coach to it. Three green LEDs and you’re good to go.
I know there’s a means of locking the PWD50 to the power pedestal so it doesn’t walk away however, I feel more comfortable keeping it in the electric bay with the Autoformer. My coach’s power cord has a male and female end. I plug the male end into the pedestal, the PWD50 into the female end of the cord and the female end of the PWD50 into the Autoformer’s male end. I have a short cord connecting the transfer switch to the Autoformer. Everything stays dry and secure. I could’ve gone with a hardwired version but if/when I sell my coach my PWD50 and Autoformer are coming with me.
4800 joules of surge protection, LED power diagnostics, ability to set thresholds for custom alerts, a replaceable surge/spike module so a new unit isn’t required, a Bluetooth connected mobile app to monitor power. I think the PWD50 is a game changer in surge protectors.

I have the PWD50-EPO-H which is the hardwired unit. By far the best surge protector that I have owned, and I have used the other 2 main brands. Hands down this is the best unit on the market today. Thanks, Power Watchdog for a great surge protector!
